Microsoft Azure Backup

Microsoft Azure Backup is a “pay as you go” backup solution and pricing model. It gives the flexibility to back up only the data you want to protect and can be used with Azure, on-premise infrastructure or VMware virtual machines.

You can run Azure Backup as a standalone “Agent” for small deployments or centrally from the Azure Backup Server. Backups are first stored to local disk and then copied to an Azure Recovery Vault for offsite, long term retention. The backups have built in capability that protects itself from many forms of ransomware so that your data is never compromised. Azure Backup has a 99.9% service availability guarantee.

Azure Backup can be used to backup the following resources:

  • Files and Folders
  • Hyper-V Virtual Machines
  • VMware Virtual Machines
  • SQL Databases
  • SharePoint
  • Exchange
  • System State
  • Bare Metal Recovery
  • Blob Storage

Key features include:

  • Compression
  • Encryption
  • Retention
  • Bandwidth Throttling
  • Incremental Backups
  • LRS or GRS Storage

Microsoft Azure Backup is a cost-effective solution that is based on a monthly “Pay as You Go” licensing model. This means no upfront expenditure for backup licensing, no rotation of USB drives or tapes for offsite retention. Offsite backups for retention are stored in the Microsoft Azure Cloud.

Pricing Examples

Azure Backup is priced on a “per instance” PLUS the amount of Azure Blob Storage used. There are 3 pricing tiers for the instances. An “instance” is based on size, so a single server or VM can be 2 or 3 instances depending on the size:

Instance Size Cost Per Month (inc VAT)
0 < 50GB – £3.73
50 > 500 GB – £7.45
> 500GB – £7.54

Example Pricing Model

If you have 1.2 TB of data, then the cost would be £22.36 plus storage consumed. You would be charged 2x £7.45 for two 500 GB increments and £7.45 for the remaining 200 GB data.
