Microsoft Azure Multi Factor Authentication

Microsoft Azure two-step or multi factor authentication is a user validation method that requires more than one verification method and adds a critical second layer of security to user sign-ins and transactions. It works by requiring any two or more of the following user verification methods:

  • Something you know (typically a password)
  • Something you have (a trusted device that is not easily duplicated, like a mobile phone)
  • Something you are (biometrics)

Get strong authentication with a range of easy verification options – phone call, text message or mobile app notification – and allow customers to choose the method they prefer. A good example of multi factor authentication is how a lot of UK banks now authenticate account changes or transactions online by sending the user a code in a text message to validate the process.

Microsoft Azure multi-factor authentication not only enhances the user validation process, it helps protect your business with security monitoring and machine learning-based reports that identify inconsistent sign-in patterns. To help mitigate potential threats, real-time alerts notify your IT department of suspicious account credentials.

Although multi factor authentication is available natively in Office 365 there is an On-premise version, which can be installed to protect on premise resources such as:

  1. Outlook Web Access
  2. Remote Desktop Connection (via the RD Gateway)
  3. Websites
  4. VPN Connections

No need to purchase a dedicated hardware token for Multi factor Authentication, the users mobile phone becomes the device for authentication. Authentication can be performed via a phone call, PIN or Azure Application.
