The five key controls within Cyber Essentials requirements

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), specify five technical control themes:

Firewalls – Every device in scope must be protected by a correctly configured firewall (or equivalent network device).

Secure configuration – Devices need to be properly configured to reduce the level of inherent vulnerabilities and provide the services required for their role.

User access control – Ensure only authorised individuals have access to applications, computers and networks required for their role.

Malware protection – Must restrict execution of known malware and untrusted software, preventing harmful code from causing damage or accessing sensitive data.

Security update management – make sure that devices and software are not vulnerable to known security issues for which fixes are available.

Our clients can choose two protection routes – hardware and software – for firewall protection. Maximising elements active within perimeter devices, and configurations within operating systems, to employ the power within the Microsoft Defender range.

How it works and it’s benefits

There are two levels of certification: Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus. The government’s partner for certification is the IASME consortium and they are committed to helping businesses improve their cyber security, risk management and good governance through an effective and accessible range of certifications.

Self-assessment questions are completed against five basic security controls, then a qualified assessor verifies the information provided.

All the self-assessment questions are available to download for free in advance. Cyber Essentials certification includes automatic cyber liability insurance for any UK organisation that certifies their whole organisation and has less than £20m annual turnover (terms apply).*

Save money on insurance – Cyber Essentials could help your organisation save thousands on insurance premiums and GDPR fines.

Reassure customers you take the security of their data seriously – By being listed on a government-backed national directory of certified organisations.

Enables you to bid for central government contracts – The certification shows you can handle sensitive and personal information to the required standards for government tenders.
